Public transport in Berlin

The easiest way to travel in and around Berlin is by using the public transport network. With a valid ticket you have access to all public transport in Berlin.

Berlin is divided into three tariff zones: AB, BC und ABC. Tariff zone AB includes the urban area until the city boundary. Zone ABC additionally includes Berlin's surrounding area, Potsdam and Schönefeld airport.

Public transport (S-Bahn, U-Bahn...) is running with intervals of 5 to 15 minutes, depending on time and line until about midnight in the week and also during night in the weekend (Friday, Saturday).

During the week nights, night busses are operating on the most important lines. Also the metrotram is operating at night with 30 minutes intervals.

S-Bahn 41 and 42 are operating as a ring around the A-Zone, S41 clockwise, S42 counterclockwise.

Tickets and fares

You can buy your tickets or WelcomeCards at ticket offices, some shops in underground stations and ticket machines around the city and in the stations. In trams you find ticket machines in the tram. In buses you can also buy tickets from the bus driver.

Tickets have to be validated before you enter the underground, S-Bahn and regional trains.

Below you find an extract of fares for public transport. According to your needs, you can choose the best opportunities. Please take into account:

  • that a single ticket is valid for a trip of max. 2 hours, transfers included, one-way-direction.
  • that a day ticket is only valid during the day you use it. It is not a 24-hours-ticket! Same principle for the 7-day-ticket.
  • Berlin WelcomeCard and BerlinCityTourCard combine the public transport with reductions on tours, tourist attractions, restaurants...
  • children up to 5 years travel for free, when accompanied. Children from 6 to 14 years can use a reduced tariff
